Here’s a super simple hack that you can use to make yourself less stressed out in the moment.
If you’re looking at your to-do list and you’re feeling super behind, I want you to say…
“I’m getting a signal that I’m behind.”
Not “I’m behind,” which it sounds like a fact, but “I’m getting a signal that I’m behind.”
Or if you’re looking around the room and you’re feeling you don’t belong here, you don’t fit in, you shouldn’t be here, I want you say to yourself…
“I’m getting a signal that I don’t belong. I’m getting a signal that I don’t fit in.”
The reason it’s helpful to do this is because it helps you separate the reaction you’re having to the situation from the reality of the situation.
It’s a super simple way to help you realize it’s not that you’re actually behind, it’s not that you actually don’t belong, or it’s not that you’re actually not qualified or whatever else your brain is telling you today.
It helps you realize: Oh, that’s just a signal that my brain is generating. It’s not reality.
It gives you a little bit of separation between YOU and all those signals that your super smart, super fast brain is generating all day long.
There’s one sentence — one central message — that I’ve built my entire coaching career around.
All my writing, all my coaching, all my business ambitions, the legacy I hope to leave in this world.
All of it boils down to ONE central thing that I’m trying to tell you.
That message is this—
Question your automatic thoughts.
The world around you is a blank screen. It contains only flat, neutral circumstances that don’t mean anything by themselves.
Your super smart, super fast automatic brain — in a fraction of a second — transforms those flat, meaningless circumstances into a dynamic, meaningful, multidimensional movie full of colorful characters and heroes and villains and success and failure and redemption.
You don’t live in the real world.
You live in a movie of your own making.
And because that movie is created by you… You can change it anytime you want.
Now, it takes a little practice to get the hang of it.
Your automatic brain has been creating this movie instantly and effortlessly for a very long time.
It’s going to feel awkward at first to start interfering with that movie.
Your automatic brain might even rebel and push back.
But with a few simple tricks and a few rounds of practice, you’re going to get the hang of it.
And when you can question your automatic thoughts and reshape the mental movie your brain is constructing in the direction YOU want it to go…
That’s when you take creative authority over yourself, your career, and your life.
