A quick way to combat imposter syndrome
One of the sneaky, subtle reasons people have imposter syndrome is that they attribute their past accomplishments to luck.
They say things like—
“It ended up turning out well.”
“Someone gave me a chance.”
“I was in the right place at the right time.”
Which sounds very humble and virtuous and all…
But the problem with this framing is that if it was just luck in the past…then you need MORE luck to do well in the future.
And who knows if the stars will align and lightening will strike again?
So here’s a quick way to combat the imposter syndrome that this belief creates—
Pick a past accomplishment (big or small).
And write out all the ways that YOU made it happen.
YOUR actions. YOUR decisions. YOUR insight. YOUR creativity. YOUR resilience.
Show your brain how YOU made this amazing thing happen.
Make the comprehensive list so your brain can really understand:
These were the inputs that created this output.
This is HOW this outcome came to be.
This is one of my favorite ways to combat imposter syndrome because you don’t even have to do anything new.
You don’t have to wait for the next accolade or success to give you permission to believe in yourself.
You just have to take credit for the stuff you’ve ALREADY done.
Easy peasy :)
