Don't Do This: Success Negligence
How much time do you spend thinking about what’s going well in your life?
The progress you’ve made? The improvements you’ve put in place?
The problems you’ve solved, no matter how intractable they seemed?
What’s really working for you and WHY?
If your answer is “close to zero,” you are engaging in what I like to call Success Negligence.
Your brain loves to focus on mistakes, failures, weaknesses, and gaps.
Your life might be 95% awesome and 5% problematic (by your own estimation).
But your brain will zoom in on that 5% until it takes up your whole field of vision.
And it honestly thinks it’s being helpful when it does this. Surely you have to keep staring at your problems in order to solve them?
Nope! If you’re staring at the 5% all the time, you are missing out on 95% of the learning.
People love to say you that learn more from failure than from success.
But that’s only because think more about your failure than your success.
The learning comes from the thinking, not the outcome.
You can learn just as much — if not MORE — from your successes as your failures.
And it’s a heck of a lot more fun to boot :)
So here’s what I want you to do going forward:
Stop neglecting your success.
Be as disciplined about tracking and learning from your successes as you are your failures.
Stop staring at the gap as if the gap has all the answers. Your successes have answers.
Why not learn from the MOUNTAIN of things that are already working, instead of the molehill of mistakes?
Your brain does NOT do this automatically.
Your brain doesn’t even notice success a little while after it’s been achieved — it puts it in the background, labels it “status quo: please ignore,” and goes back to worrying about what else could go wrong and the next thing you have to achieve.
So YOU have to go in and do this deliberately.
Notice everything that’s going well.
Dig into why. What you did but also, crucially: what you were thinking and feeling that led you to do that.
And apply the wisdom you already have, wherever you need it.
The answers you’re looking for are already in you.
And I have a reliable, tried-and-tested, step-by-step process for getting them out.
Stop asking people what you should do, or looking outside of you for yet another fix.
Let me show you how to uncover what you already know to be true and find the courage and conviction to put it into practice.
It’s faster and easier than you think — and more fun than you can imagine. So let’s go.
