Don’t gossip about your gut 🤫
Here’s a sequence I see a lot of high-stress high achievers go through, in moments big and small.
First, they have a gut instinct to do something.
It could be something as big as leaving a job or deciding who to marry…
…Or something as small as sleeping in an extra 30 minutes or deciding what tasks to push to tomorrow vs. get done tonight.
Then, they question that gut instinct.
Am I crazy?
What if I’m doing this wrong?
What would other people say?
Am I just lazy?
Then, they feel conflicted and waffle back and forth.
Ugh, I don’t know.
On the one hand, I really think this makes sense.
But on the OTHER hand, what if I’m totally wrong about this? What if I look like a fool and mess everything up?
Okay, fine, I’ll just follow my gut instinct.
NO WAIT. I’ll do what I’m supposed to do.
NO WAIT, I’ll follow my gut instinct.
NO WAIT, I can’t do that.
AHHH.
Let me give you a way out of this indecision prison—
Host a Bravo TV reunion :)
(This is one of my favorite unexpected coaching tools — I wrote about it previously here.)
I want you to imagine that you’re hosting a Bravo TV reunion.
You are Andy Cohen, the neutral moderator.
And there are two reality show contestants at this reunion.
Their names are Gut Instinct…
And Gut Questioner.
Here’s what’s happening right now.
Gut Instinct is saying, “Hey, I think we should do this!”
And then Gut Questioner is jumping in and saying, “What? We can’t do that. That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard.”
And then, Gut Questioner starts gossiping about Gut Instinct.
They start saying things like,
“You want to know WHY she’s suggesting that?
I’ll tell you why.
It’s because she’s lazy, and impractical, and undisciplined, and has her head in the clouds, and just wants to slack off and do nothing…”
And here’s what you need to do, when Gut Questioner starts gossiping about Gut Instinct.
You, Andy Cohen, need to step in and say…
“Thank you, Gut Questioner!
But now let’s turn the mic over to Gut Instinct and hear from her directly.
Gut Instinct, are these accusations true?
What are YOUR reasons for making the suggestions you’re making?
We want to hear from YOU.”
And then let your Gut Instinct talk.
No gossip. No interrupting.
I want you to hear it straight from the source.
You don’t necessarily have to run with your gut’s suggestion.
Remember, you’re the moderator.
YOU get to decide.
But I want you to have the best possible information as you’re making your decision.
And third-party gossip isn’t great information.
I want you to hear it straight from the source.
Coaching is all about learning how to have these kinds of internal conversations with yourself.
Because no part of you is bad or stupid or lazy.
No part of you needs to be “healed” or “fixed” or “corrected.”
Every part of you is GOOD.
Every part of you makes sense.
And if you’re feeling stressed or stuck or frustrated with yourself…
The only thing that’s happened…
Is that some of those good parts of you have come into conflict with each other.
And we just need to identify that conflict, talk through it, figure it out, and get you back into alignment.
That’s what coaching helps you do.
And if you want to do that with me, there are two ways we can work together.
You can be one of my private one-on-one clients.
Book a free consult to come talk to me about how we can work together.

What my clients have to say…
“I think the biggest transformation is not hating my brain.
Now, I work with it and am like, ‘Oh, right, it's doing this to protect me. Thanks, brain!’
I love that I have this relationship with my brain that's like a partnership."
