Don't Know Where to Start? Do 1 of These 5 Things
Listen up, my smart, capable, and ambitious friends.
Here are the things I already know for a fact:
You have great ideas. You have razor sharp insight. You have big plans for the world and every ability to achieve them.
But when it’s time to sit down and actually do the work, does your brain totally freeze up on you?
Do you find yourself staring at the blank document while sirens go off in your head and your only thought is “I don't know!!!”
(And then you quit and scroll Instagram for a while?)
I know. Me too. But here’s the thing:
“I don’t know” (and all its variations) is not a fact. “I don't know” is a story made up by your brain (aka, a thought).
Want proof?
Next time you feel stuck…
And your brain is insisting that it REALLY doesn’t know ANYTHING this time…
Do any one (or multiple. or all.) of these 5 things.
And it will show you that you know a lot more than you think.
1: Write down everything you don’t know.
So your brain is insisting it doesn’t know anything. That’s okay!
Let it talk. Get it all out on paper. List every single thing you don’t know.
Great! Now you have a list to go tackle.
(And you did know something. You knew what you didn’t know.)
2: Write down everything you DO know
What are all the things you DO know? Write them all down. Every single one.
Huh. Seems like you know a lot more than you think
3: Take 3 guesses
They don’t have to be right. They’re just guesses!
You’ll be amazed how your brain responds when it just has to guess.
4: Set a timer and JUST TYPE for 5 minutes without stopping
It doesn’t matter if you just type “idk idk idk” for five minutes straight. (You won’t, by the way.)
Just. Keep. Typing. Get out of your own way and let things just get rolling.
5: Go talk it out with someone
Find someone. Have them ask you the question you’re trying to answer. And then just start talking.
You’ll be surprised at how much good stuff comes out of your mouth.
Guaranteed, you’ll be saying “Hang on, let me write that down, that was great actually…”
I know that “I don't know” (and the emotional charge that comes with it) can feel overwhelming.
And it can feel very hard to get out of that frantic, anxious, stuck-feeling place.
So you’re not going to make it too complicated. You’re not even going to try to change your thoughts.
Just jump in and do one of these five simple, easy things.
And SHOW your brain that it’s wrong. You know plenty. You know more than enough.
