When people see this photo, they usually ask me: What did you do to lose the weight?
Here’s the question nobody asks: What did you think to lose the weight?
The real problem — the true root cause of your issues — is never your actions.
Here were some of my old actions:
Eating (and overeating) whenever I got stressed
Choosing lots of fried food, and not that many vegetables
Inhaling my food and having no clue what “enough” really felt like
And I’d tried changing my actions a million times, but somehow I could never quite get it to stick… Why?
Because actions are just a symptom. They are not the disease.
Now here were some of my old thoughts, that were driving these actions:
Food will help me calm down.
Vegetables are boring.
This is just how I’ve always eaten.
So simple and innocuous, right? These don’t seem like big, scary, monstrous thoughts.
And yet, these were the simple, little thoughts that were driving all the actions that were keeping me stuck.
The real problem, and the real solution, is always your thinking.
The exact set of thoughts you have today is keeping you exactly where you are now.
And if you want to be in a different place, you have to find and change every single thought that is keeping you here now.
