How Your Thoughts Create Your Results (It's Not ✨Manifesting✨ – It's Psychology)
Today we're going to talk about how your thoughts create your results.
I'm not talking about magic or ✨manifesting✨.
I’m talking about how your brain uses its existing beliefs as a lens to interpret the world.
As always, we’re going to use the self-coaching model to break this down.
Circumstance: the boring, objective facts in the world
Thought: what you think about your circumstance
Feeling: the emotion which arises when you think that thought
Actions: what you do and don’t do when you feel that way
Result: the effect of your actions on you
We're going to use two people in our example today: Behind Betty and On Top Of It Allison.
Betty and Alison have the same job, meetings, and to do list.
And Betty and Alison take the same actions.
But this the crucial difference: their actions are driven by different thoughts and feelings.
And because of that difference, Betty and Allison create different results.
How can this be possible?
This is possible because of the two ways in which your thoughts create your results.
Your thoughts determine the WAY that you take the action
Your thoughts determine what you THINK about the actions you took
Let’s look at Betty.
Betty looks at her job, meetings, and to do list and thinks “I’m so behind.”
When she thinks that, she feels afraid. She’s stressed, panicked, and anxious.
When she feels afraid, how does she take her actions?
She replies to her emails frantically. She grabs the first couple on the top and doesn’t prioritize in a thoughtful way.
She prepares for the meeting haphazardly. She procrastinates for a while and then slaps together a plan last minute.
She watches the movie distractedly. She thinks about work the whole time and doesn’t actually get any rest or relaxation.
She ends up more behind tangibly, in the real world, because of the WAY she’s doing her work and the WAY she’s recharging for the next day.
And when she feels afraid, what does she think about the actions she took?
She looks at her emails and thinks, “I only got to 5. I still have 20 left. I’m so behind.”
She looks at her meeting and thinks, “I didn’t prepare enough. They’re going to hate what I say. I’m so behind.”
She looks at her evening plans and thinks, “I can’t believe I wasted so much time. I should start earlier tomorrow. I’m so behind.”
She ends up more behind in her own head, because of her mind’s relentless confirmation bias about how behind she is.
And so Betty creates a result of “being behind” — in the real world AND in her mind.
Now let’s look at Allison.
Allison looks at her job, meetings, and to do list and thinks “I’m so on top of it.”
When she thinks that, she feels fun. She feels in control and in flow.
When she feels fun, how does she take her actions?
She replies to her emails calmly. She scans her inbox, prioritizes a few messages, and leaves the rest behind on purpose.
She prepares for the meeting with focus. She thinks through her options, makes a plan, and executes it without drama.
She watches the movie with satisfaction. She fully unplugs and gives herself the rest she needs for a good day tomorrow.
She ends up on top of things tangibly, in the real world, because of the WAY she’s doing her work and the WAY she’s recharging for the next day.
When she feels fun, what does she think about the actions she took?
She looks at her emails and thinks, “I did a great job prioritizing. If I dropped anything, I’m sure it’ll pop up again later. I’m so on top of it.”
She looks at her meeting and thinks, “I’m ready. I prepped enough without overdoing it. I’m so on top of it.”
She looks at her evening plans and thinks, “I got a lot done AND I had time to relax in the evening. I’m so on top of it.”
She ends up on top of things in her own head, because of her mind’s relentless confirmation bias about how on top of things she is.
And so Allison creates a result of “staying on top of it” — in the real world AND in her mind.
This is how the same actions taken in the same circumstances can create totally different results.
It all depends on what you're thinking and feeling that is DRIVING your actions.
This is why, when you're solving a problem, it's so important to NOT look for actions first.
If problems could be solved simply by finding the “right actions,” we would have all solved our problems already.
Your actions are not the problem OR the solution.
You have to start with your thoughts.
You have to ask yourself:
What am I thinking right now that is preventing me from solving this problem?
What do I need to think and believe instead in order to effectively solve this problem?
If you can get those two questions right…
The right actions will arise in front of you. It will be so obvious.
You will execute those actions effectively and actually solve your problem.
You will build confidence and belief that you are somebody who can solve this kind of problem again and again.
And that's how you actually create the results that you want.
And guys, this style of problem solving is not intuitive.
When it’s YOU in the hot seat, and your emotions are high, your brain will jump to actions.
It will say, “Just tell me the process. Just tell me the three things I need to do. Just give me the steps. Just give me the strategy.”
And plenty of people in the world are here to offer you those actions.
They will tell you, “Here's the best morning routine. Here's the best time management system. Here's my five step process for getting promoted in a year. Here's my script for how you negotiate a salary.”
And actions are awesome. I have nothing against them.
But actions don't really create your results.
What really creates your results is your thoughts.
I could give you the perfect blueprint, and if your thoughts are not helpful to you, you still won't execute it in a way that gets you the results. And you won’t build your belief that you can get those kinds of results consistently for yourself.
So if you want my help to…
See your own thoughts more clearly and understand why your problems aren’t solved yet
Brainstorm effectively on new perspectives that are believable and WORK for you
Put those new thoughts in practice in the moment and build new thought habits even when your brain is resisting it
Solve your problems for good and actually create the life you want
