I have a question for you.
This is a painting called The Holdout by Norman Rockwell. (It’s one of my favorite Norman Rockwell paintings.)
I want you to imagine that this scene is the inside of your head.
There are many, many voices telling you what you should do.
Authoritative voices. Logical voices. Angry voices. Strident voices. Expert voices.
“Come on! Stop holding us back!” they say. “Just do what you’re supposed to do and get on with it already!”
And then there’s one little voice in you…
That quietly, simply, frustratingly…
Says “No.”
It says: “I disagree. I have my own ideas. This is what I think.”
This is the voice of the True You.
The You that you were before the world got its hands on you.
The You that you’ve been since before your parents were born.
And as you watch this scene play out inside your head…
I just have one question for you.
