If you worry a lot, here’s a rule for you
There are two kinds of things you can worry about:
Real-world circumstances — Things that have actually happened, and now you have to problem-solve how to deal with them.
Hypothetical circumstances — Things that have NOT happened in the real world. There is nothing to problem-solve. Nothing has happened yet.
If you worry a lot, let me give you a new rule to follow:
Only worry about real-world circumstances.
And if no worry-worthy real-world circumstances have happened yet…
DO something, try something, take a stab, run an experiment…
In order to generate some real-world circumstances…
And THEN you can worry about them, if you need to :)
“I’m worried my startup idea won’t work.”
Go talk to potential customers. Get one customer to do an MVP with you.
And if it doesn’t work, worry about it — and problem-solve it — then.
“I’m worried that going to that event all by myself will be super awkward.”
GO to the event. SEE if it’s awkward.
And if it is, worry about it — and problem-solve it — then.
“I’m worried I’ll choose the wrong job offer.”
Pick one and see. Live through it and see how it turns out.
And if you don’t like it, worry about it — and problem-solve it — then.
(Your career is nothing but a long series of experiments, after all :)
Worrying about hypotheticals feels productive.
But in reality, it just paralyzes us into not taking action.
You’ll learn 100x more if you just do SOMETHING and then learn from and problem-solve the real-world circumstance that gets created…
Than if you spend that same amount of time thinking and worrying about what COULD happen.
So get out there, do something, try something, run ANY kind of experiment at all…
And create a real-world circumstance to worry about .
No worrying allowed till then :)
