Look at the monster 🧸
I want you to think of your emotions as little monsters 🧸
Every time you feel something — anxiety, fear, anger, uncertainty, inadequacy, awkwardness, etc.
Think of that emotion as a little monster that just popped into your head.
Here’s what we normally do in response to that monster—
WE RUN 🏃♂️💨
We either run away from the monster…
You feel anxious and so you grab your phone and open Instagram to distract yourself from the anxiety.
You feel uncertain and so you procrastinate that task and do something else to distract yourself from the uncertainty.
You feel awkward and so you order a nice big glass of wine to distract yourself from the awkwardness.
Or we run in the direction the monster is telling us to run…
You feel angry and so you snap at someone, because that’s what the monster told you to do.
You feel anxious and so you work another two hours, because that’s what the monster told you to do.
You feel inadequate and so you analyze yourself for flaws and mistakes, because that’s what the monster told you to do.
But did you know you have a third option?
You don’t have to run away from the monster.
You don’t have to run in the direction the monster is telling you to run.
You can stop, turn around, and look at the monster 🧸👀
That’s it.
You don’t have to do anything else.
Just look.
What color is the monster?
What shape is it?
How does it move?
What sound does it make?
No thoughts. No judgments. No stories or implications.
Just observe it.
The same way you might observe a ridge in the Grand Canyon or a log in a forest.
Can you just look at this picture?
How about this one? Just look.
If you can look at those pictures…
You can look at the monster 🧸
No stories. No judgments. No meanings. No conclusions.
Just look.
