My Favorite Habit: The 60 Second Celebrate 🎉
I work with so many clients whose greatest wish is to get something done.
Whether it’s…
Tackling a big, unknown project: What’s the next step in my career?
Knocking out the stragglers on their to do list: Ugh, why don’t I have my shit together?
Or stretching beyond their comfort zone: Why can’t I go talk to that person about my business idea?
And when they show up to a session, all pissed off at themselves and ready to give up…
Here’s an exercise I love to do with them:
What do you think when you don’t get something done?
What do you think when you do get something done?
For so many people, the answers to those questions are:
When I don’t get something done, I beat myself up. What’s wrong with me? This doesn’t even make sense. When am I going to figure this out?
When I do get something done, I still beat myself up. I could have done that better. That’s not nearly enough. I still have so much I need to do.
Everyone knows that negative reinforcement makes you NOT want to do something…
And positive reinforcement makes you WANT to do something…
So what happens when you give yourself negative reinforcement no matter what you do?
Yeah, no shit — you want to give up and quit the game altogether!
And it’s not because you’re not capable of doing what you want to do…
…or because you don’t “want it badly enough.”
It’s because your brain has created a total lose-lose situation.
So here’s the sneaky little habit that I use to break this lose-lose cycle.
I call it…
The 60 Second Celebrate 🎉
Here’s how it works:
Every time you finish something…
Set a timer for 60 seconds
And celebrate yourself in writing until the timer goes off
Yes, you have to write (or type) it out! Just thinking about it isn’t enough.
Yes, you have to do it every time you get something done. Even if it feels silly and ridiculous.
And yes, you have to do it even when you feel like “I don’t have the time.” Because listen. You always have sixty seconds.
The reason this is so important is because it gets you out of your lose-lose cycle of being damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
And it helps you create the habit of feeling good about yourself.
Guys. Stop waiting for your to do list or your boss or your performance review to finally MAKE you feel good about yourself.
Feeling good about yourself…
The positive reinforcement that will make you want to DO all the things you want to GET DONE…
Can only come from you.
And feeling good, feeling proud, feeling worthy, feeling like a badass…
➡️ Is. A. Habit. ⬅️
It’s not a magical event that finally happens one day in the future.
It is a muscle that you need to work every single day.
So give yourself tons of opportunities.
And very single time you get something done…
Do a 60 Second Celebrate :)
