The exact process I used to navigate every career pivot
Let me tell you the exact process Iāve used to navigate every career pivot Iāve madeā¦
And that I still use to set my business strategy today.
When I find myself stressed, stuck, and not sure what to do nextā¦
I spend a few days doing thisā
1ļøā£ I observe myself throughout the day
I reserve just a tiiiiiny bit of brainspace (1-5%) to watch myself from the outside while I do things.
2ļøā£ I wait for myself to slip into flow, or into āthe zoneā
It doesnāt have to be a 4 hour deep working session. It could beā¦
2 minutes while Iām talking in a meeting, and the words come effortlessly
15-20 minutes when I sink into a task and get in the groove
A sudden flash of insight while Iām clearing the dishwasher
I guarantee that your brain will slip into the zone at least 5-10 times over the next few days ā even if itās just for a few minutes at a time.
3ļøā£ I look across those instances and ask: What IS that? What do I do when Iām in the zone?
Everyone has a unique Flow MO š«
The INTERNAL experience of flow is similar for everyone.
Time disappears.
Youāre effortlessly firing on all cylinders.
Youāre totally absorbed in what youāre doing, and it feels great.
But the EXTERNAL expression of everyoneās flow is quite different.
My Flow MO usually involves writing, speaking, absorbing information, and crystallizing insights.
Your Flow MO might involveā¦
š§® Quantitative analysis and making sense of things through data
š² Or gauging risk and making bets
šÆ Or organizing people to get something done
š« Or setting big visions unencumbered by how things are done today
The brief āin the zoneā moments youāve gathered show you the glimmers of your Flow MOāØ
4ļøā£ I build my business strategy and next career step around that
To make an analogy:
Your Flow MO is like the underlying technology.
Your next step is like the product built from that technology.
Itās hard to build a product if you donāt understand the underlying technology.
And itās hard to build a GOOD product if you donāt work with the strengths and weaknesses of the underlying technology.
Yes, you have other things you need to care for in your career:
The money you want the make
The titles you want to have
The impact you want to create
The values you want to live by
The flexibility you wonāt compromise on
But achieving all those things starts with understanding the technology that you are working with ā the base technology of YOU.
Because thatās what creates everything else.
