There’s a quote I saw online that I just spent quite a while looking for.
It wasn’t by any famous person — it was a screenshot of a tweet or a Tumblr post.
I can’t seem to find it again, but it stuck with me so much that I’m going to do my best to paraphrase it for you now.
It went something like this—
Imagine that you’re talking to God, or your guardian angel, or the universe.
And you ask it:
“Why am I here? What is my purpose in life?”
And they tell you:
“Remember when you were 12, and you helped that old woman cross the street?
You were just here for that. If you hadn’t helped her, she would have been hit by a bus.
But, yeah, that’s it!
Everything else is just extra free time :)”
We spend so much time wondering…
What is my purpose?
Am I fulfilling my purpose?
Am I maximizing my potential?
Am I on track?
Am I where I’m supposed to be?
What if you’ve already fulfilled your purpose?
What if your entire reason for being was just so you could do some small, natural, seemingly inconsequential thing, that you didn’t even think about at the time?
And now that thing is done?
The puzzle is complete. Your task is finished. You’re totally good.
And everything else — all the time you have left here on earth…
Is just icing on the cake, and glorious extra free time?
Happy Friday :)
