When Is It Time to Hire a Coach?
When I tell people I’m a life coach, the first question I usually get asked is “What do you help people with?”
Good question! Here are the four categories of problems I generally work on with clients.
Or, said another way, here are the four types of symptoms clients usually come to me with.
“I feel bad.”
This can sound like…
I feel like I’m always behind.
I’m just so stressed all the time.
I’m so tired. How do I get more energy?
I wish I could be less anxious.
I have everything I want… Why can’t I enjoy it?
…or anything else that boils down to “I want to FEEL different than I’m feeling now.”
“I don't know what to do.”
This can sound like…
I don’t know what I want to do with my life.
I’m confused about how to make this decision.
I wish I could figure out how to achieve this goal.
I have a plan, but I’m really not sure if it’s right.
I’ve been working away at this, but I’m not getting the results I want. What am I doing wrong?
…or anything else that includes the words “confused,” “not sure,” or “I don't know.”
“I know what to do, but I’m not doing it.”
This can sound like…
I want to stop overeating.
I want to stop procrastinating.
I want to be more productive and manage my time better.
I need to get control of my spending.
I want to get into a relationship.
…or any other scenario where you know WHAT to do…and you know it’s not rocket science…but somehow the “actually do it” part isn’t happening.
“Other people are driving me nuts.”
This can sound like…
This other team at work is really stressing me out.
My boss is rude and infuriating - how do I deal with them?
I keep fighting with my spouse and it never goes anywhere.
I’m super frustrated with this person, but I don’t know how to talk to them about it.
I want to be less worried about what other people think.
…or anything else where The Problem involves another person just not doing what you want them to do.
Okay, I have one (or multiple) of these problems. How do I know when it’s time to hire a coach?
Here are 3 questions I want you to ask yourself:
1: Am I 100% committed to solving this problem?
It’s okay if you’re not!
We all have plenty of problems that are sort of “low grade” and we’re willing to just tolerate them rather than put forth the effort to fully solve them. There’s nothing wrong with that.
BUT I wouldn’t recommend hiring a coach unless you are fully ready to commit to getting this problem solved.
When your perspective is basically: “Listen, coach. I’m not leaving until we get this done.”
2: Am I dissatisfied with my current trajectory of progress?
If you’re highly committed, chances are you’ve tried to solve this problem before. You’re probably even trying a bunch of things right now.
If you’re looking at your suite of current tactics and you’re like, “Yeah, if I just keep repeating what I’ve been doing, I don’t think this is ever getting solved.”…
If you’ve been trying the same stuff over and over again and not seeing results…
It’s time to hire a coach.
3: Am I ready to question everything I thought I was right about?
Here’s the hard truth you need to be ready to hear when you start working with a coach:
Everything you THOUGHT you were right about has created the exact results you have right now.
Your diagnosis of the problem. What you should and shouldn’t do to solve it. What’s possible. What’s not possible. What your options are. And your entire dang analysis of the whole situation.
If you had all of those things RIGHT already, you would have already solved the problem.
The fact that you HAVEN’T solved it is testament that you are wrong about something.
And that is AMAZING NEWS. Because that means you DON’T have to stay stuck and you CAN solve this.
And your coach is going to be right there to point out exactly what you’ve gotten wrong — as long as you’re willing to hear it.
So if you have one (or more!) of the problems I outlined above…
And you just answered yes to the three questions I asked you…
Then what are you waiting for!!
It’s time for you to feel better.
It’s time for you to have clarity and conviction about what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.
It’s time for you to get shit done and get to that goal already.
And it’s definitely time for you stop letting that person drive you nuts.
Get in here and let’s talk.
