Where Does Your Value Come From?
Old Definition: Value is something I CREATE.
Most of us think value is created.
You start the day at 0 value created.
You work and you work — diligently, efficiently.
And by the end of the day, hopefully, you have created value.
The value you create is a function of the time and effort you put in.
You’re like a little value factory, where you shovel in the raw material of your time and effort, and little value widgets pop out at the end.
And when you believe this definition of value, it’s very hard to work LESS.
Because every hour you’re not working is a value widget lost.
Every day you work less is a day you were a little less valuable.
You mattered a little less.
Yeah, this definition sucks.
Let me offer you a new one.
New Definition: Value is already in me, always. Value is something I DEPLOY.
Your value is not generated through your outputs.
Your value lives in you.
Your value is your brain. Your experience. Your personality. Your jokes.
Your unique perspective on the world.
Your singular kaleidoscope of joys, pains, lessons, triumphs, escapades, and quiet days.
Your value is already inside you — always.
You cannot erase it. You cannot ever have less of it.
Even if you do nothing all day.
The only thing you do is deploy it.
When, where, and however much you choose, at any given time.
It’s the one illuminating question you ask in the meeting.
It’s the flash of insight you have in the shower.
It’s the kind word you say when you could have stayed silent.
Your value can be deployed effortlessly, in an instant.
And over hours, with great effort.
It’s totally up to you.
But it is always in you. Always alive. Always working.
Deploy as much or as little of it as you please.
Nothing can ever reduce it.
Nothing can ever take it away from you.
