Why That Thing Isn't Getting Done, and How to Solve It For Good
What’s that thing on your list that’s just not getting done?
Is it a boring, tedious task?
Book flights and hotels for that wedding
Call five doctors and get an appointment
Is it a big, scary, undefined task?
Figure out what I want to do next in my career
Work on my novel / screenplay / business / app idea
Is it “self-care” that just keeps slipping off your plate?
Do my skincare routine every night
Work out three times a week
Why do you think it’s not getting done?
If you’re like most people, your brain immediately said: Because I’m lazy.
Okay. Let’s test that hypothesis.
Imagine yourself at your desk (or the sink, or the gym). The time has come. You’re about to start doing the thing.
What thoughts and feelings are coming up for you?
Let me give you some real examples from when I’ve done this exercise with clients:
“I don’t know where to start, and I feel overwhelmed.”
“I feel bad that I haven’t done this already, so I feel guilty.”
“I don’t think I should have to do this, and I feel angry.”
“Everyone is going to find out I’m a fraud, and I feel afraid.”
“I don’t want to do this, but I don’t know what I do want, so I feel stuck.”
You know what’s not showing up anywhere in these answers? “I’m lazy”!! Laziness is nowhere to be found here!
Which means…
Your brain is just wrong about why that thing isn’t getting done.
If you think your problem is that you’re lazy, you’ll think the solution is to be stricter with yourself.
But you cannot solve guilt, overwhelm, anger, fear, or stuck-ness with just being strict and powering through.
If anything, being really strict only makes you feel bad. And when you feel bad, you don’t feel like getting things done.
So all you’ve done is create another layer of bad feelings that you now have to get through.
If you want to get things done in your life, you have to diagnose and address the real reason why they’re not getting done today.
How can you feel that surge of overwhelm, and actually use it to pick a place to start?
How can you let go of guilt, anger, and fear and instead focus on what YOU want, what YOU deserve, and what YOU’RE excited about creating?
How can you use stuck-ness as a jumping off point to figure out what you really want?
All it takes is learning how to look at, talk to, and become friends with your own brain.
Come talk to me and let me teach you how.
