Here’s the fundamental thing we do in coaching:
We debug and update your mental operating system.
What’s a mental operating system?
Mental operating systems are why different people feel differently and react differently when faced with the exact same circumstances.
When your team member comes to you with a problem they want your help solving…
Your mental operating system might say, “Ooh, a fun opportunity to brainstorm! Let’s chat!”
While someone else’s mental operating system might say, “Ugh, an annoying interruption. Let’s get this over with so I can get back to working in peace.”
When someone asks you a question in a meeting that you don’t know the answer to…
Your mental operating system might say, “Omg, I’m being revealed as a fraud. Panic!”
While someone else’s mental operating system might say, “Great question actually. Let me give my best guess right now and note that down to look into later.”
Your mental operating system determines your initial automatic response to a situation…
AND the full-fledged Mental Mode your brain goes into based on that initial automatic response.
Because that initial automatic response doesn’t just fade away…
That initial automatic response — if you believe it and let your brain run with it — puts you into a full-fledged Mental Mode.
When you think “Ooh, a fun opportunity to brainstorm!”…
You go into Fun Brainstorming Mode.
And when you’re in Fun Brainstorming Mode…
You feel relaxed and curious
You throw ideas out there without worrying about how they’ll be received
You grab the pen and start sketching something out on the whiteboard
You make unexpected connections
You hear a new perspective and adjust your answer without feeling self-conscious about it
You’re super helpful to your colleague AND have a ton of fun doing it
When you’re in Fun Brainstorming Mode…you have a ton of fun brainstorming.
(And probably do some pretty great work to boot!)
When you think “Omg, I’m being revealed as a fraud”…
You go into I’m A Fraud Mode.
And when you’re in I’m A Fraud Mode…
You feel stressed
You focus on everything you don’t know
You totally forget about everything you DO know
You hesitate to speak up
You caveat everything you say
You come across as less qualified than you actually are
When you’re in I’m A Fraud Mode…you act like a fraud.
(And probably don’t do your best work either.)
😡 So whenever you face a problem in your life…
🌎 The problem is not what’s going on around you.
🧠 The problem is the Mental Mode your brain is going into.
😊 And whenever something is going well in your life… (!)
🌎 What’s working is not what’s going on around you.
🧠 What’s working is the Mental Mode your brain is going into.
So this is what we do in coaching—
We pick a problem to work on — a place in your life where your mental operating system is overheating or freezing up or not outputting the results you want.
We identify the mental “line of code” that’s creating this problem — the initial automatic reaction and the Mental Mode it’s triggering, which is what’s creating this problem in the first place.
We craft a new line of code — a new thought or perspective — to slot into your operating system instead.
Then we test it. Does it work? Does it hang together with all the other logic in the system? Does it give us the outputs that we want?
(Because if not, this new code isn’t going to compile. Your brain will go around it and keep using the old code just to keep the system running.)
So, just like when you’re debugging code, we’ll spend some time iterating on and refining this new piece of logic until it “compiles” — aka, it resonates and actually makes you feel different and act differently.
And then once it works in the testing environment (aka the coaching session)…
We make a plan to deploy this update into the live production environment (aka your real life).
This is a super simple, repeatable process.
