Make it "Stupid Doable"
So we’ve been talking about all those things that just aren’t getting done…
And how the reason they’re not getting done is NOT because you’re lazy…
And how the #1 emotion you need to get things done isn’t motivation or commitment but rather safety.
So today, let me tell you one of my favorite ways to stop the overwhelm, pause the mental beatdown, and create safety for my brain so I can do the things I want to do.
I call it:
Make it stupid doable.
This is not just about breaking something down into smaller steps.
This is about creating such a dead-simple, STUPIDLY EASY, obviously doable task that it literally feels dumb to just do that.
Here’s how you’ll know if you’re got it right:
If your brain is shouting, “But that’s not enough!! That won’t get me to my goal!!”
Perfect! Then you’re on the right track.
Let me give you some examples.
Normal: Figure out the next step in my career
Stupid Doable: Write without stopping for 2 minutes about “What do I want to do next?”
Normal: Find a freelance marketing gig
Stupid Doable: Spend 10 minutes clicking “like” on projects on Upwork
Normal: Do my skincare routine every night
Stupid Doable: Turn on the faucet and put water on my face
Normal: Get my sleep schedule back on track
Stupid Doable: Lay in bed with my eyes closed
Normal: Stop beating myself up and be nicer to myself
Stupid Doable: Do one 60 second celebrate
Really notice how your brain feels when you look at the Normal tasks vs. the Stupid Doable tasks.
Doesn’t it feel…Relaxed? Relieved? Calm? Like you put down a heavy burden and you can breathe?
Isn’t the thing literally as good as done, the second you look at it?
Perfect.
By now, your brain is probably asking “Okay, but what am I supposed to do after I finish that? I still haven’t gotten to my goal, remember?”
Here’s the answer:
Do whatever you feel like doing.
And if you don’t know what to do, just do another Stupidly Doable thing.
That’s it. That’s the whole process.
There’s no plan. There’s no tracker. There’s no “getting your shit together.” There’s no yelling at yourself.
Because guys. You do not need any of those things to do everything you want to do.
You don’t need accountability. You don’t need a deadline. You don’t need to get strict. You don’t need to be a different kind of person.
All you need are safety and self-trust.
Safety to take that first, little, stupidly doable step.
And self-trust to decide what next little step you want to take.
And if you keep coming back to that, again and again, you cannot help but create the life that you want to create.
