Stop Saying "I Don't Know What I Want" and Do This Instead
When I talk to people about actively creating the life they want, one of the first things they usually tell me is “But I don't know what I want.”
If you are one of those people, let me stop you right there.
Of course you know what you want.
Your internal compass is alive and well. All you need to do is extract it.
Here are 5 exercises to help you extract your internal compass…
…and 1 warning for what’s going to happen afterward.
Exercise 1
If you knew you were going to die in 5 years, how would you spend your time?
Exercise 2
List 10 times you felt totally in flow and were just loving what you were doing.
What are the common themes?
Exercise 3
Write down 100 things about yourself. Likes, dislikes, traits, quirks, etc.
(Yes, 100 things!)
What are the common themes?
Exercise 4
For the next 2 weeks, spend 2 minutes every day writing without stopping on the question: "What is my purpose?"
Exercise 5
What is your worst life? Write it out in detail.
Then flip every sentence to the opposite. Bam, best life.
If you do all five of these exercises, I guarantee you will develop a clearer sense of what you want out of your life than you've ever had before.
And here’s what’s going to happen next…
Warning
Your brain is immediately going come up with objections.
That isn’t practical.
It’s not in my control.
It’s not realistic.
I don’t know how to do that.
I don’t have time.
That’s too vague.
The path isn’t clear.
I could fail.
People will think ____.
This is completely normal. Nothing is going wrong when this happens.
But your brain isn’t RIGHT.
This is just its natural reflex reaction when it thinks about going after the life you actually want.
What’s the solution?
It is NOT to stop, give up, and never think about this again.
It’s to pick a small, stupid doable thing and get started.
And if you want some help, come talk to me :)
