How to Appreciate How Good You Are Without Getting Arrogant
In my last post, I talked about the ONE thought loop that holds back High-Stress High Achievers: they start thinking they’re not good enough and then they find + create confirming evidence for that belief everywhere they look (EVEN when there’s plenty of evidence to the contrary).
One of the best ways to break that loop is to start appreciating you good you are.
And yet, when I suggest this to people, they have a lot of concerns.
They tell me: “No way. If I start appreciating how good I am — if I REALLY let it sink in — I’m going to become arrogant, lazy, sloppy, and complacent.”
First of all, this is not true.
Feeling crappy about yourself does NOT help you improve.
And confidence actually makes you calm, curious, UN-arrogant, and open-minded, which DOES help you improve.
But, if your brain is still convinced that appreciating yourself is a one-way ticket to Arrogant Asshole Land, let me give you an easy way to get started.
Make observations, not judgments
Don’t puff up your ego or tear others down.
Stick to the facts.
OBSERVE your processes. OBSERVE your outcomes.
These could be things like:
I consistently maintain Inbox Zero. Others on my team say they wish they could do that, but they can’t figure out how.
When I had to research a space I knew nothing about, I was able to get up to speed in one week because I knew how to prioritize and where to focus.
I kept a running list of my learnings on this topic and turned it into a training at the end of the year.
I spotted and called out a potential issue that no one else noticed.
This project wasn’t making any progress for six months. I got involved and did XYZ, which got it unstuck, and now it’s going well.
Get out of the land of generalities. “I suck.” “I’m amazing.” “I know nothing.” “I’m a genius.”
Appreciate yourself with specific observations and facts.
There are plenty to go around. You just have to notice them :)
